Boardwalk Homeless

I’ve got books in my cart
I’ve forgotten when I’ve read.
Pages up my sleeve’s heart
hidden with the salt and bread.

When I walk down the street
people get out of my way,
everywhere surrounded
by my life’s cloth bound defeat.

I walk to the water
to watch myself wash away,
just like my daughter,
that the tide’s foam slipped away.

Where is that pretty day –
the one that turned the corner
just as I walked its way –
leaving this ragged mourner?

Sorting through this baggage –
a smile, the bay, come what may –
Here’s a shiny package –
now just throw it all away…
